Influences on Materialism

Am I the only one, or does shopping in places like Walmart completely overload the visual and auditory senses and leave the shopper feeling overwhelmed paired with slightly confused?

I have experienced this many times while walking through the stocked aisles, and I have trouble focusing on what I came intended to purchase. In Target stores, where products are typically more aesthetically appealing, the feeling is a bit more intense. It is difficult to stop browsing through all of the things I mentally add to my "wish list." Especially now that I will be moving into my first apartment at the end of August, I find myself absentmindedly strolling through the home section, comparing prices of towels and toasters.

I must admit that I have fallen subject to advertisements and the lures of materialism. Maybe I am more aware of this feeling because I am beginning my educational training in the field of psychology. I realize, and I still have a lot to learn, how the mind works and what can influence one's everyday decisions.

The next time you go shopping, try to take note of what is influencing your senses and guiding your purchases of one product over another. You may find it interesting because I know I do.
